Kollabit is a remote-first software studio in Canada. We build websites, CRM systems, mobile apps and AI automation for small businesses — mostly legal and real estate practices who've been quoted $15,000 and three months by someone else.

We scope work in days and ship in days. That only works with people who can go from a conversation to a working product without a project manager in between.

About the role

Most “AI engineer” jobs are research jobs with a product label stuck on. This isn't that. You'll take a real problem from a real customer — a paralegal drowning in intake emails, a brokerage losing leads after 6pm — and build the thing that fixes it. End to end. In days.

You decide the architecture, you build it, you ship it, you watch it work. Then you move to the next one. If you like owning problems and hate being three layers away from the person using your software, this is the job.

What you'll do

• Build AI-powered features into client products — intake, classification, summarisation, retrieval, drafting
• Design RAG pipelines, prompt architectures and evaluation loops that survive real usage
• Choose the right model for the job, and recognise when a regex would have been fine
• Ship working software to production for small businesses
• Talk to clients directly to scope what's actually needed versus what they asked for
• Write the unglamorous glue — auth, webhooks, error handling — that makes AI features usable

What we're looking for

• 3+ years building and shipping software, including at least one AI-powered product in production
• Strong TypeScript or Python, comfortable across frontend and backend
• Real experience with LLM APIs — Anthropic, OpenAI, or open models — well past tutorials
• You understand evals, and you've been burned enough to build them
• You can explain a technical tradeoff to a business owner without condescending
• Live URLs or repos we can look at

Nice to have

• Vector databases and retrieval at small scale
• Agentic or tool-using systems that ran unsupervised
• Regulated industries — legal, healthcare, finance
• Cloudflare Workers, Vercel, or similar edge platforms
